Timeline

A Legacy Along the Colorado River

Early 1900s

A Working Ranch

Long before it welcomed guests, the property was part of one of the pioneering ranches of the Moab Valley. Members of the Tangren family helped transform the fertile river corridor into productive farmland, clearing fields, constructing irrigation systems and raising livestock along the banks of the Colorado River. For generations, the ranch served as both a family home and a working agricultural operation, reflecting the resilience and ingenuity that shaped southeastern Utah.

The 1970s

Tangri-La

Inspired by the property’s extraordinary setting, Bud Tangren began creating what would become one of the most distinctive hospitality properties in the American Southwest. Rather than constructing a traditional resort, he envisioned a private retreat that blended seamlessly into the surrounding sandstone cliffs and Colorado River landscape. He affectionately called it Tangri-La—a nod to both his family name and the mythical Shangri-La.

1970s–1980s

Carving a Resort from the Cliffs

Over the next several decades, Bud Tangren personally transformed the property with remarkable craftsmanship and imagination. Using heavy equipment and countless hours of labor, he carved guest rooms directly into the Navajo sandstone, creating naturally climate-controlled cave accommodations unlike any others in Utah.

The growing retreat also featured a dramatic riverfront lodge, outdoor dining terraces overlooking the Colorado River, sports courts, baseball field, gathering spaces, landscaped grounds and thoughtfully designed architecture that embraced rather than competed with the surrounding canyon walls.

1990s–2010s

A Destination for Pilots

As word spread, Tangri-La developed an almost legendary reputation within the backcountry aviation community.

A private 3,000-foot gravel airstrip allowed pilots to fly directly into the ranch, descending over the dramatic red rock canyons before landing just steps from the Colorado River. Aviation magazines frequently highlighted the ranch as one of the Southwest’s most unique fly-in destinations, where guests could stay in cave suites carved into sandstone, gather in the riverside lodge and experience the beauty of canyon country from both the air and the ground.

For many pilots, arriving at Tangri-La became a bucket-list adventure and helped establish the property as a beloved destination within Utah’s backcountry flying community.

2000s

Cave Man Ranch

As the property evolved, it became more widely known as Cave Man Ranch, inspired by its iconic cave accommodations built directly into the cliffs. While the name changed, the property’s defining qualities remained the same: exceptional hospitality, extraordinary craftsmanship and an unforgettable setting along the Colorado River.

Photographs of the ranch, from any era

Fifty years of this place live in other people’s albums — the Tangri-La years, the aircraft on the strip, the seasons before any of us arrived. We are gathering them, and we would be glad of yours.

If you have a photograph of this ranch, we would like to see it

Guests, pilots, Tangren relatives, anyone who came through when it was called something else. A print, a slide, a negative, a snapshot with a date written on the back — any of it. We will scan it, return the original, and credit you if it is ever used.
